Ok, I went and looked at that book review and I can't get over the fact that the author apparently believes there were no stories where children discover they have special abilities before the Harry Potter series came out. And that no one was having kinky sex before 1983...

Yeah, I was wondering about the "no BDSM before 1983" thing, too. I know it was used in fanfic as a category earlier than that!

Also, special powers? F.L. Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was published in 1900. Swedish author Selma Lagerlöf wrote her 1st Nils Holgersson book in 1906; fellow Swede Astrid Lindgren (creator of "Pippi Longstocking", 1944) wrote "Mio, My Son" in 1954, in a story that has tons of parallels to Harry Potter. And that's just OTOH.
